12:05 pm: The Holistic Approach

I have been a holistic therapist for the past 15 yrs and have developed my own approach to treating my clients, as most therapists do.

What does holistic mean to you in terms of treatment.  Well it’s where the therapist uses their skills to work out what is going on in both the mind and the body.  The body cannot work without the mind therefore the body will not function efficiently if the mind is ill at ease.

I therefore take the consultation period seriously and listen to the clients tell me about how they feel, even during the treatment more can be revealed.  One can determine a lot from visual and verbal information as most of my colleagues in the field will agree, without gaining a rapport with the client then the treatment is not as effective.

Trust in the therapist is vital and allows you to try treatments that may take a few weeks to establish and have any effect.  Too many people want instant results and with orthodox medicines they often do get that especially if its pain relief.  Natural remedies always take longer to get into the systems and work more gently rather than harshly.

The mind is the most powerful tool used in healing and I choose to use it to help with planting positive messages as part of their treatment, it helps them help themselves.  Relaxation of the mind is crucial if the body is to find relief from stresses and strains; therefore part of the treatment would include some breathing exercises and energy releases, calming the systems down in order for the treatment to have most benefit.

The holistic approach in orthodox medicine is to use dietary, medication and counseling sessions to do the same thing and for a lot of people this is a way forward for their condition.

Quote Thomas Sydneman’* (English physician)

“I often think more could be left to nature than we are in the habit of leaving to her, to imagine that she always wants the help of art, is an error too”

There are limits to our understanding and we still only have scratched the surface with the treatment of the mind, as only a fraction of our brain power is used at any one time.  Therefore when it comes to unexplainable healing powers people are not sure what to believe?

Natural Healing is apparently a gift to all of us and we have the ability to heal ourselves firstly and with training, heal others!

Healers are often ridiculed because there is no scientific proof that what they do is provable?   Maybe we have to except more willingly that they are more powerful human beings with gifts beyond our understanding and be grateful that they are there to help anyone who seeks their skills.  After all, the Chinese and Japanese have been practicing acupuncture for thousands of years and its only recently been accepted by orthodox medicine, to be used as pain relief.

To end this article is difficult because there is so much more to say!!!

10:38 am: Stress

Stress comes in many forms and is commonly used in everyday terms.  In fact it is too easy to blame all common illnesses on :

”I am suffering from stress”

What is stress?

Over the years as a therapist I have found that people come with many symptoms, most of which come under the umbrella of stress symptoms.  All stress symptoms have route causes and  I have generally found that people are unable to cope with a build up of the stress factors that can come from external or internal forces

External forces

These can include death , financial problems, family commitments, work or moving house

Internal forces

These include  factors uch as emotional turmoil, chronic illnesses , self worth, fulfilment etc

A culmination of factors over a long period of time is the most negative because chemicals produced by the body when under stress cause the symptoms below:

a)    chemical imbalances

b)   b)nerve responses are heightened

c)    digestion becomes impaired whereby the enzymes fail to be produced at the right time and in the right quantities

d)   emotional chemicals can cause lethargy, lack of energy and motivation

Stress relief

Many articles have been written about the effects of stress and it is surely complex but as a therapist my aim is to reduce some of the symptoms so that the client can function better and improve their coping facilities. Simple coping strategies are:

·        prioritise problems rather than try to do everything at once

·        reduce some of the stress factors

·        try to have regular meals

·        take time out to relax

Relaxation is a key strategy

Leading a fast life can mast all sorts of health problems and many people do not listen to their bodies when it is screaming out for help! It is essential to rebalance your energies every day to enable you to cope with the next day but many are too tired to even think about it.

Time is another key factor , making time for yourself can be difficult when running a family and job etc but any form of relaxation is better then none at all. There are many forms of relaxation and you need one that suits you and the time you have be it reading, watching tv, exercising , walking , listening to music or many others- anything that takes u out of the stressful situation and gives you time to reflect and reassess.

As a therapist I can help using special techniques to enhance relaxation, that is, to help release muscle tension , rebalance energy pathways, to enhance energy flow and to generally help the client feel better. This is what most people are striding for: a feeling of well being and the ability to cope with every day life.
